Bio: Secretary of State Colin Powell was born in New York City on 5th April 1937 and was raised in the South Bronx to Jamaican parents Luther and Maud Powell, after emigrating to the United States from Jamaica.

Colin was educated in the New York City public schools and graduating from the City College of New York (CCNY), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Geology. He also participated in ROTC at CCNY and received a commission as an Army second lieutenant upon graduation in June 1958. His further academic achievements include a Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University.

Colin has been a soldier for 35 years, and was a 4-star General. He's received 2 Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal, a Congressional Gold Medal. He was the 12th Joint Chief of Staff which is the highest military position in the US Government, being in charge of The Persian Gulf War. He's chairman of "America's Promise-The Alliance For Youth" which is an organization geared towards mobilizing and empowering America's youth to build up their character and competence.

He's written his autobiography "My American Journey", and has had several schools and institutions named after him, as well as receiving numerous honourary degrees from American institutions.
